CLOSURE OF THE SQUARE TOILETS

It is with regret that the Parish Council has decided to close the public toilets on the Square in Milnthorpe village. This has been a difficult decision which has taken several months to make. The building, which is currently leased, will be returned to the landlord, Westmorland & Furness Council.

Milnthorpe is not the only village to do this. Toilets in Cartmel. Ambleside and Windermere have suffered the same fate.

There are many reasons for the decision, these include:

- Regular abuse of the facility

- Low numbers of people using the facility. Many users are non residents.

- Soaring costs of providing the facility

The net cost to the Council (Costs minus income) is c£10,000 per annum. This is paid from the Council Tax received from the village tax payers. For many years the Parish Council received a grant from SLDC which covered the shortfall, however, the provision of this grant ceased 2 years ago and the shortfall has been funded from Council reserves, this cannot continue.

The Parish Council recognises that this may inconvenience a small number of people, but it must act for the benefit of the whole village.
